Meet some of the animals in our care, hear their stories, and discover what goes into running Africa's largest equine sanctuary. This is not a zoo or a petting farm. It is their home. A visit to KDS is an opportunity to step inside the everyday life of a working sanctuary. You may meet members of our donkey herd, horses, and other rescued residents while learning more about donkey behaviour and welfare. Because animal welfare always comes first, the animals you meet and areas you visit may vary according to their needs, the weather, and sanctuary operations on the day.
We ask visitors to move calmly around the animals, follow the guidance of our team, and allow every resident to choose whether or not they wish to interact. Please do not feed any animal unless specifically invited to do so. The greatest respect we can show is allowing them to be themselves.
KDS sits within one of South Africa's most remarkable landscapes. Beyond the sanctuary, Meiringspoort Private Nature Reserve protects indigenous habitat extending into the Swartberg Mountains and the UNESCO World Heritage listed Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, a reminder that sanctuary is also about protecting the wild world around our animals.
